The Only Thing that Counts Is Faith Working in Love
This meditation is based on a passage for June 9, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: Galatians 5:1-15
Reflection and Question: Finally Paul lets loose with his exasperation toward the Galatians who have not understood the nature of freedom in Christ where the faithful become servants to one another in love. Instead the Galatians are biting and devouring one another. Does that sound familiar? Paul highlights circumcision. In our times, we can say with him, “In Christ Jesus neither gay nor straight counts for anything. The only thing that counts is faith working in love.” This is the hope of righteousness that comes through the Spirit. How does your faith work in love?
Prayer: Jesus, our Guide, You have called us to freedom. We know that many take freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence. May that not be so for us. Keep us from falling away from grace. Help us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Amen.
